I recall back when non-smokers were rejoicing at the smoking ban that I claimed, don't be too happy, they're going to go after alcohol next.
Anyone noticed how the recommended level of alcohol consumption keeps dropping?

Having recently restocked the cellar, I'm not planning on giving up yet. Besides, you have to drink it before it goes off.

Wine in my magic cupboard only 'keeps' if I forget it's there.

Once did that with some Thomas Hardy Ale in little bottles, and only found it when I moved and emptied the cupboard.

You were predestined to find them. Did some calamity occur afterwards?

We had some malt whiskey we never got round to drinking, about 5 bottles I think. Sold it in an online auction for £5k ish.

So why has the rate risen and remained close to peak for women? Presumably smoking rates have gone down across the board, meaning something else is elevating lung cancer rates.

Who knows. Peak vehicle numbers? Modern sealed homes and the fumes from new furniture and fittings? Increased alcohol consumption?

Not a clue. Curious why it's risen in both the UK and France for women. Maybe EVs, or covid vaccines, or chemtrails.

A quick Google suggests that one reason is that women are genetically more predisposed to certain kinds of lung cancer, including the ones that are non-smoking related.

Not if those diminishing tax returns are replaced by other polluter-pays taxes.

Well, the tobacco tax is an interesting one, as the reduction in cancer treatment costs will be more than offset by people living longer, I guess. Musk is actively seeking to reduce life expectancy in the US amongst the poor and POC (considerable overlap) - it's one way to reduce state expenditure, I suppose.

There won't be "polluter-pays taxes" if everyone goes green. All road users will pay. EV users should prepare for future costs.

Not noticed that other taxes are rising in line with the drop it tobacco revenue?

EV's still pollute (somewhere), and will need roads, so they'll need to be taxed somehow.

Trouble is that the electorate always wants more stuff & facilities, but (usually) ends up by voting for the party that tells the biggest whoppers about the tax burden and who's going to pay it.

And brake dust.

https://www.sciencealert.com/cars-make-one-thing-even-more-toxic-than-diesel-fumes-study-reveals

Brake pads previously contained asbestos fibres to deal with overheating. However, asbestos was banned in the UK in 1999 because of links to lung disease. This resulted in the motor industry designing new brake pad linings, including non-asbestos organic (NAO) pads commonly used in vehicles today.

We compared the harmfulness of dust from the wear of different pad types. Ironically, we found that dust from the NAO pads, designed to replace asbestos-containing pads, was the most toxic to lung cells compared not only to dust from other pad types, but also to diesel exhaust dust.

Most EVs will be subject to the standard rate road tax from April. Earlier models will pay a lower charge.

Can I be the first to say "there is no road tax".

That said, the road tax move is unbelievably stupid. If you want to encourage people to move to greener vehicles then making them pay more than ICE drivers is just plain idiocy.

If you manage to find a cheap EV you pay £195 fair enough. But any EV over £40k which is most of them you pay £620 for your road tax. A comparable ICE will be cheaper and pay less tax despite polluting more.
