So let’s get to the point: in July 2024 the people of Coventry South voted for a Labour MP committed to NATO membership, support for Ukraine, and a moderate defence budget. What they’ve now got is an MP who wants to pull out of NATO, who calls their own country “imperialist” but not Russia, who is “inspired” by a bunch fake leftists and wants to scrap both our armed forces and Coventry’s defence industry.
Sultana has no democratic mandate for promoting such politics using the privileges of an MP. People watching the podcast interview who’ve said she sounds “stupid”, or “like a student union leader” are badly under-estimating the damage she is doing to democracy.
This is a calculated political move to guide people who are justifiably outraged by Israel’s war crimes in Gaza into a movement to damage the national security of the UK. It’s being done in collaboration with European politicians who are explicitly hostile to the UK’s interests. As of right now, for the first time since the 1930s, we have an MP in parliament who wants to leave our country defenceless against Russian aggression. Yet nobody voted for this.
So maybe the people of Coventry South deserve a by-election: maybe Sultana should stand down and try to get elected on the political positions she now holds rather than the ones she stood on just over a year ago?
After all, in 2020 she was one of just seven Labour MPs who
voted for a Bill to force all MPs who change parties to do exactly this. But it seems that is yet another political principle she no longer holds.
