Can the (Met) police ever change?

I am currently deep into apple harvest right now

I suspect I spend a lot longer* selecting the good apples that are keepers and which wont taint the rest of the storage boxes, than the Met does with their recruitment.

*As in actually doing some scrutiny.

However this 'bad apples' thing is a wayy overdone trope imo

It's the overall 'culture' (rot spreads via mycelium) that's the problem.

You may well be correct, but, the "bad apples" do have to be removed, as part of the cultural change

More bad news for the Met as a firearms cop is charged with murder.

One troubling aspect to this case is the cop, at present, 'cannot be named for legal reasons'.

There may be an argument for not naming him while the investigation is proceeding, but he has now been charged.

Anonymous defendants is just not an avenue we should be going down, no matter what they do for a living.

Hopefully, this will be corrected when the case starts in earnest.

Keeping up with the 'bad apples' metaphor maintains the idea it's just a rare few that are tainting an otherwise blemish free bunch.

As with all such situations it take a lot of people staying silent, closing ranks, or pretending not to see.

They themselves are 'enablers'

Re Cris Kaba case:

"A spokesperson for the Met Police Federation said being a firearms officer in London was "one of the world's toughest jobs", and that decision would "leave serving Metropolitan Police colleagues concerned as they go about their incredibly difficult and dangerous work".

Dangerous for whom?

I ask because I'm struggling to recall the last time I heard of an armed officer dying on duty.

They get called in to volatile situations but they have the upper hand in terms of number, training and equipment.

I don't know any beat coppers* over the age of 35. They've all specialised away from it and the SFOs and AFOs all say they would have left if they had failed to get on firearms.

What the Met Fed spokesman really nears is that he doesn't want accountability

*actually I know one.
