The beach economy is still a big deal. ("Northern Powerhouse"?)

The local Labour luminaries in the area I live didn't join the "Northern Powerhouse". I think, even coal picking on Seaham Beach is at an end now. ;)

Partly, I believe, because the beach/sea has recovered a great deal quicker than predicted from all the mine wash which gave rise to sea coaling.

Closet Tories...

You wouldn't say that if you heard them celebrate Thatcher's death or heard the general abuse hurled at Tories.

Makes some of the punters on here sound like choirboys.

There's a lot of troubled political trauma in NE constituencies that'll take generations to resolve... not least: the red tories of Hartlepool, Durham NW, Bishop Auckland, Sedgefield and Stockton South; voting for Brexit; and the loss of the traditional Labour vote. Thatcher must be laughing her socks off...

No problem of that nature in South Tyneside, Labour votes are weighed, not counted. Healthy demand for donkeys to wear labour rosettes. ;)

South Tyneside MBC are one of the best Councils to work with in the NE so I have no complaints about the socialists in charge of ST.

I've long held the view that the Council Leaders of Local Authorities should be the constituency MPs in Parliament which would guarantee local representation across the whole country- that way what's important for each and every resident's concerns within Council wards is directly connected to Government without that extra tier.

They might be fine to work with, I wouldn’t know.

Not so good to live with, complacency reigns.

We have a new leader now, the Malcom dynasty has ended.

Can't have it both ways. If it is wrong for Johnson to jet to a party, it is also wrong for the thousands of 'activists' to do long-haul flights using hundreds of thousands of litres of fuel in doing so.
Have thousands really done it? And anyway, most will be flying internationally to go between their home and a week or more trying to save us all, while Johnson is flying domestically for farking dinner when there are trains and even his limo would have been less damaging.

It is trivially true that any one person's flight doesn't make much difference. When you see this being used by the leader of extinction rebellion [...]
Do you really think XR has a leader? I thought you were cleverer than to get misled by NewsUK or whoever is repeating this now.

Greta pulls no punches in her closing statement. I fear she may be right: but at least COP has pushed the environment back up the news agenda.

I see Charles Moore's used the infamous "Project Fear" bomb about climate change now...
soon we'll see it touring the UK on that old diesel-powered red bus.
