COP26: All talk or some real action on climate change?

I completely agree!

But please bear in mind that The Honourable Gentleman above was accusing the Royals of hypocrisy - which was why I challenged him!

But that is my point. At the extreme end, your line of thinking means that a chinese coal miner cannot accuse Western leaders of hypocrisy over climate change. But the agency / power is completely different.

The hypocrisy challenge has to take into account the ability to influence and change the outcome. In my case, quitting my job due to air miles would have been at a high cost to my family (mortgage to pay etc.) and a very small difference to the problem whilst the Queen pushing for changes and being seen to enact those changes herself would be much more influential with lower cost to an institution with the capital to withstand these changes with very little risk.

They may be 'into it' but what are they actually doing?

The Queen was said to be 'irritated' I think at her governments lack of progress on climate change..

Tbh if she was allowed to say that this year, it's a shame she didn't say the same decades ago, when all this was already known about, when the need for change was obvious..

It might have added some heft to the call for transitioning away from fossil fuels.

As it is, it feels like speaking up too little, too late.

Same goes for Mr Attenborough.

He knew, and he was very muted about it all as well.

OK, so we're making a ranking of people who speak up about climate change. They're all talking, and they're all doing something, but they're all also doing bad shoot (flying to conferences, eating some red meat, using WI-Fi - whatever, everyones on that spectrum, we're agreed that noone in the West is a saint on this.) So most of them are hypocrites .. but not all. Best to be sure you are quite high up the list before you call someone else out:

Please give me your additions/ corrections:
Climate Change deniers - give them credit, ain't no hypocrisy there
Greta
Mudsticks (and everyone doing eco-farming stuff in the UK, but still using some plastic)
That chinese coal-miner who protests at weekends (with a mask to hide his identity from his employers)

I'm ON A PLANE !!!
For the first time in 18 months or so, am finally travelling again!
I’ve missed it to be fair, I know that sounds strange, but after flying on an almost weekly basis for over 20 years, it’s a wonderful return to ‘normality’. Heathrow feels like a missed friend. .

At the risk of repeating myself: I'm not keen on calling out hypocrites AT ALL.

But it does pi55 me off when people do it to score points, so you deserve what you get ...

I really don't see what your beef is here?
I have never denied that I fly as part of earning my living or that I enjoy it as part of my job. Maybe ask my employer why I have to Jet around and whether they couldn't come up with lower carbon alternatives. Nothing is perfect, we can all do better.
What's this about scoring points?

I think if someone of global standing is berating others about a lack of action I think we have a right to ask what they are doing in their own back yard. In this instance that definitely applies to Queen Bess, her estate and entourage.
It's not all about me you know....

We're all global now! (you more than me, it seems ... ;) )

At what point in the "global standings" does one lose the right to berate others? (bearing in mind that Her Maj was actually criticising UKGov, not thee and me.)

This is my problem here; everyone wants to shout "HYPOCRITE!" when it suits them. How come YOU* are allowed to complain about the actions of others, but Boris isn't? How about Greta? Or me?

*Substitute everyone on the internet who ever talks about Climate Change.

(I probably shouldn't have bothered with this line of agitation - but the "HYPOCRISY!" moaners have pi55ed me off enough, and our very own Frequent Flyer Freddie moaning about her dear dear Majesty seems to have finally tipped me over the edge .... )

By your token, nobody is then in a position to challenge anybody! As nobody is perfect, then everybody is a hypocrite who asks questions of others. But that's useless semantics and get's us nowhere.

We may all be global, but few of us are in a position to influence others on the world stage. Lizzie is, and whilst I'm happy for her to tell the UK (and by extension) other governments and leaders to 'do rather than talk', it's still fair to ask what the accuser (the Queen in this case) is doing herself. This has nothing to do with me or my air miles, is not hypocritical (because it';s not about me remember), just a valid question!

Yes, but what does this questioning achieve?? It's not like she's here to answer your interrogation. Do you think this will somehow move the internet cyclists' debate forward? How will her answer(s) inform us, and to what end?

Oh feck it - can I introduce you to our Honourable Member @Unkraut ? I think you might get on.

Massive difference of hypocrisy I think. This goverment/Johnson trying to show to the world some sort of moral authority at cop26 is so far removed from their actual policies, makes them fair game for criticism I think !
I'd say the average activist on the street/at home trying their best should feel no guilt....we/the media should be focusing our attacks on the ones who hold power !

I think you're probably right. But I'd emphasise that almost no-one except Johnson's government has significant power. The Queen doesn't make any laws! Greta doesn't, I don't, Fabbers doesn't. Attenborough doesn't, nobody on Springwatch does ...

(There might be some local councils who should also be in the firing line, if I try to follow my own logic ... )

I'm familiar with the oeuvre of @Unkers over very many years. But that still doesn't prevent one from asking what Her Maj is doing towards helping mitigate CC other than talking about it. You challenged me, I answered. I wish to ask Queenie much the same question if that's OK with you? If others know and can let me know, that would be great.
And whilst your challenging me, what's your CC strategy?

People may not make laws, but citizens and others are influencers. I'd suggest the Royal Famalam has some influence of the the thoughts of their loyal subjects (and even some of us disloyal ones), through the mobilisation of public opinion mountains may be moved. C'mon, either you're bored at work or summat, 'cos this is very basic stuff.

Anyhow, may have to chat later, gotto shoot to Heathrow shortly...there's bags to pack countries to visits...and it's all about 'Plant Based (allergen reduced and clean-label) Foods'* for me at work at the moment, so there's a plus ;-)
