International sport is already political.
You don't have nation states, which sports teams represent, without having 'politics' in the first place.
The whole World Cup shebang being held in Quatar is of course a political event in itself, but I understand that's already being covered in another thread.

Many Iranians are travelling to Qatar to protest during the Iran matches. There was a lady in Newsnight yesterday asking the England side to join in the protest in the stadium.

Also, seminaries in several cities have been set on fire in cities around the country. People are not giving up, and the harder the repression, the stronger the protests become.

I totally get the strength of feeling that's leading to the fire setting.
Although i worry that will lead to justification of even fiercer repression .
But then we're talking about a regime that will have a woman killed for not covering her hair.
And then murder young people in non violent gatherings.
So the repression was already off the scale, our 'norms' of non violent direct action / peaceful protest, aren't necessarily relevant here.
Keeping it in the news and letting our representatives know that we've not forgotten, seems like all we can personally do atm.

Footballers have spoken, both the captain during the press conference (saying he is they are with the protestors and that thing need to be changed or word with the same meaning) and during the flag ceremony with the players refusing to sing.
Brave of them to do that hopefully it will encourage more to stand up. In that light, they(iranian forces) attacked the Kurdish in kurdish Iraq last week, ques they are afraid of the minority which even Saddam Hussein or Isis couldn't silent

This will hopefully will be a first step on determining responsibility, hopefully followed by criminal proceedings at some not too distant point.
The protests continue, with more victims every day. Today it was reported that a footballer had been arrested, with the general take being that this was a warning to the national team to behave.

Initially the government seemed to think that they could ride out the protests, but over time they realised that people weren't backing down. At this point the revolutionary guard -seppah- started taking a more active role, and the death toll rose dramatically. There are images of people filming from their windows and being shot at. However the harsher repression seems to have brought even more protests.
The Guardian is reporting the arrest of the footballer I mentioned above.

The headline is misleading, and the guy never said that the morality police would be disbanded. As reported in the article itself, he said that the body that established the morality police could also disband it, but that it was out of his remit.
The regime will not be seen to be giving in to the protests

Yes it seems there was some confusion over what was said.
But it's a positive to see that so much of our media is still reporting, and that the regime in Iran are aware of and responding to that interest.
Agree the gov are not going to want to lose face - being seen to listen to their victims is anathema to those who seek to control by violence

Not sure how much weight this has internally for the regime, as both have always been reformists.
On a closer to home note. Former students of the university where my wife studied staged a silent protest at the campus entrance today. They were charged at with battons and rubber bullets, and one of my wife's friends was hit with a batton. She had her phone taken but returned because it was "clean", but they took her bank card, so she's been identified. She is sore from the beating, but the worry of what will happen now is worse.

Yes i saw that too - it has to carry some weight surely - if only because its something thats being reported in international news .
Hope your wifes friend is ok - must be very scary times to be living through - best wishes and courage to all of them .
I saw there were some quite well observed strikes in support of reform in many cities a couple of days ago too.
