And he was dragged off by other people - implying he would have carried on
That appears to be what tipped the balance towards a custodial. The guy may have been rude or provocative but he didn't attempt any violence, and then after he was punched Amesbury continued to punch him until dragged off, thus aggravating the assault significantly. He then refused to plead guilty. He got what he deserved.

I wonder what purpose a pre-appeal jailing serves other than summary punishment. He's not a flight risk, and probably not much of a risk to the public. Plus prisons are crammed already.

Very little I suspect. According to what I have read, the Magistrate felt that given the nature of the offence a punishment of custodial was required, even when balanced against the prison capacity issues. I doubt an appeal will achieve much given the nature of the CCTV. He's pretty much bang to rights.

And he will only ever serve 40% of the 10 weeks. So it’s 4 weeks in jail.

How long would it likely be before his appeal is heard? (I have no appreciation regarding court delays beyond the often reported "massive backlog")

Not correct. He pleaded guilty at the first opportunity on his 1st court appearance

Well, he was a risk to at least one member of the public ie the man he assaulted.

I don't think Amesbury was treated harshly, but, rather that the lesser known thugs are not treated harshly enough. The ability to go about your legitimate business in a public space, without the fear or actuality of being assaulted by some thug, is a human right IMHO.

The bloke in question was "having a go" at Amesbury - so not just "going about his legitimate business"
However, he was not offering up any physical threat - and certainly was not after the first punch and when he was on the floor

IMO Amesbury deserved what he was sentenced to - especially as he was a MP which comes with responsibilities

His appeal - as some people seem to be misunderstanding it - is just about the sentence, presumably saying it is too harsh
but I suspect he will be out by the time that is sorted anyway

but it does delay the recall petition and any subsequent election which gives the local Labour Party a chance to get a plan in place and try to find a way to reduce the impact Reform have on it

Oh - and in the meantime he still gets paid - which I expect his wife is quite pleased about as he is not high on anyone's list as a potential employee and they probably still have a mortgage to pay

That is the worst punishment.
He loses his £90k job and has a criminal record, so employment will be difficult.

Irony doesn't work so well online - especially with those who don't do irony.
I think you're supposed to put one of those emoji things. There's quite a few of them apparently -
