Here's another one who is struggling to understand what a speed limit means. If one didn't know better, one might start to think that there's someone organising these twits to tell their stories of ignorance.

I think he's just not very bright, and wants everyone to know. I'm not sure he should be allowed behind the wheel.

I've got a speed limiter on my car. I press it when I'm at a speed limit to help me keep to it. There are times though where I have an involuntary foot spasm and floor the accelerator. This rockets me forward to at least 40 in a 20 zone so I've got 220 points on my license and I've spent almost two months of my life in speed awareness courses. This is all so totally unfair, because I'm a good driver just like everyone else.

Ah, OK. Does that mean we should hit naughty children too, Celia? After all, they just need to be taught a lesson, don't they?

So a model driver is one that slow down for speed cameras and then speeds back up again? Good to know.

I got passed on a section of the M4 between Reading and Slough last week by a Porsche that triggered the speed camera and must have been doing around 100mph. They went through the next one without slowing too and I'm guessing all the others at regular intervals. I couldn't decide if they simply hadn't noticed the first flash, were on cloned plates or were a mega rich overseas national / diplomat etc. who simply didn't care.

Who decides? You're coming close to the 'we don't need experts' stance.
Are you advocating 'common sense'?

An example. At a very high level, I see people who I know are autistic and who have lives and presentation that reflects this. I have friends with outwardly entirely normal kids who seem almost desperate for them to be autistic so they can get help at school. Some have paid a couple of grand to get a diagnosis rammed through.

I think a lot of them are what we used to call shy, introvert and/or socially awkward. A diagnosis is almost making it worse.

I think the issue more that there are an element of parents who diagnose it themselves and use it as an excuse for bad parenting / bad behaviour. There is also seemingly a lot of self-diagnosis of 'mental health issues' as a reason for people to not do things they are asked / required to do which seemed to mushroom during the pandemic.

On the other hand. getting a genuine diagnosis for learning difficulties / behavioural issues can be frustratingly difficult.

I’ve seen this.

It isn’t particularly new. Going back 30/40 years, I knew parents who were genuinely struggling sometimes with lively kids and they would say “Oh my child is hyper-active“.

Then I met a hyper-active child, and his heroic mother and realised the condition was not trivial and in no way should be applied to normal healthy lively children.

I am torn as mental health is more recognised than ever before which is undoubtedly a good thing, and may have helped me in my younger years when I struggled with depression and self worth. But it does bother me that it seems to be straying into influencer territory with celebrities claiming ‘specialness’ due to being ‘on the spectrum’, which doesn’t sit well with me.
