Cookie, you're not going to get anywhere with this, but it does contribute to a rather unpleasant forum, please consider ignoring it.

it was unpleasant long before i arrived....bullying, mysogony, abuse, flagrant language. But its what you all wanted.

but yet again more calls for the ignore buton to be used, not good for inclusive debate, but thats not really what you all want.

This has become the Brexit forum, with the occassional other topic dropped in. A place for remoaners to moan and abuse at their will

Ah yes, the person who threw British farming under the bus for an unimpressive deal with Australia. I mean why buy meat from the fields around us when we can bring it from the other side of the world during a climate crisis. CCalling Truss 'thick as mince' is insulting to Mince....

who said you cant buy meat around us, just cause we done a deal with australia??? more flubber gusting from the non cooking fab foodie

This is fantastic. The Tory party was always full of arses but this current crop are something else. They’re doing more to deliver an independent Scotland than anyone outside of the SNP. Keep it coming Ms Truss. 👍

there wont be an independant scotland.......you had your vote, it was to remain in the UK

Yup I managed to get exactly this point into msm t'other day..

Whilst being interviewed about the effects of climate change, and the drought on UK farmers and growers ..

How long will quality grass fed, high welfare meat be able to withstand competition from feed lot, lower welfare standards production systems shipped in from the other side of the globe ..??

Why would UK farmers bother to carry on??

All the talk of 'supporting UK farmers to do high quality production' means very little when they're letting in low quality product that the multiples can sell more cheaply.

Quite aside from the carbon footprint, of transportation..

Even a non specialist TV journalist can get it, seems others are still a bit slow on the uptake .

Oh well....

we been shipping new zealand lamb into this country for years......multiple tv comercials about too. So no change there.

"A combination of favourable prices for UK shoppers and the history of trade between the two nations has kept New Zealand lamb on British shelves for the past 137 years".

fozy tornip

At the controls of my private jet.
I was surprised to hear, on some R4 prog about the climate emergency, that the carbon footprint of getting a New Zealand lamb chop to an English supermarket refrigerator cabinet is less than that of a Welsh lamb chop. Carbon friendlier farming practices in NZ swing it, notwithstanding the freight miles.
Who'd a thunk it? Not us, evidently.

Different kettle of fish. NZ is NZ not Aus different standards etc. When we joined the EU access for the UK to meat and dairy from NZ was subject to particular and specific agreements.

We still have lamb, often intermingled with UK product in supermarket shelves of ready to cook cuts. The Anchor brand once associated with NZ butter and cheese is now on UK produce.

There's certainly some room for improvement in our production systems here.

Many farmers are moving to lower input, lower stocking density operations, and different grazing regimes which are good for soil carbon sequestration - which give similar if not better monetary returns (due to the lower input costs of bought in feed and fertilizer)

This also allows better reintegration of trees into the landscape , aids peat restoration, and flood amelioration ..

There's a whole load more to it than that including retaining of social capital in the uplands and associated benefits, but that's just some of it

It always depends on how you cut your 'whole / true cost' analysis of course..
