I'm finding it quite amusing nearly everybody claiming that their 'tribe' saw through him... the 'centre left' and 'radical left' blaming each other for being fools, and by doing so, looking like fools... e.g.

In truth, he managed to charm all sorts of people (goodness knows how). It would be better if people just stopped this tribal blame in this case, and people admit they were taken in (or knowingly overlooked his misogyny) by a (probable) serial rapist because of his fame and his embrace of their political standpoint. It looks like his choice of politics was completely predicated on calculations of which would be most beneficial to him, not on moral principles.

When people say "It's political correctness gone mad!", they should be shown stuff like this and be asked whether 1) It was OK at the time, and 2) Would it be OK now still. At least that gives them the benefit of being able to accept that attitudes have changed have changed for the better. Just imagine being a victim of rape and seeing this kind of 'banter'.

The only people who mention 'politic correctness' seem to be those who complain about it, and they nearly always misunderstand what it's about.

It's wilful misunderstanding, to try to weaponise something that ought to make them think about their own behaviour (past or present).

The key for me is that very, very few of his colleagues in comedy liked him. If you are a comedian and aren't getting on with any other comedians it usually points to you being a "wrong'un"

That Guardian(?) piece questioning why he was everywhere in the first place had a point. Not particularly funny, witty in a really creepy way, intelligent in a Boris sort of a way (obscure words to say things that turn out to be not all that perceptive). I'm not sure unknown anyone who particularly thought great, there's another Russel Brand show.

This does seem to have happened on our behalf quite a lot over the years.

Well some friends went to see his live stand up show 10 years ago and people were suspect then. It’s easy to spot a wrong en especially when they think they’re invincible.

The fact he can swing from Left wing lovey, to Covid denier, to MAGAsupporter to religious zealot in a matter of a decade just shows he really will do whatever he thinks is best for him.

He’s a bit like the famous quote “Those who stand for nothing fall for anything.”

And you have to be suspicious of people who have such wild swings in belief.

The truth is if he wasn't jailed he would still convince a lot of people that he is actually a really misunderstoood nice lad.

I had forgotten he threatened to sue Suzanne Moore over a fairly mild critique.

"I called him, ‘A winkle-pickered Jesus clown’ who wrote ‘sub-Chomskyisan woo.’ I suggested he had help from a ghost writer. Legal letters were exchanged and I was made to apologise".

The Guardian gave him a column. The Sun voted him Shagger of the Year 3 times. The media fete and enable these people and their behaviour then afterwards it's 'How did he get away with it for so long?'. Depressing.

The only thing that has really dated in that piece is how the far right took to him just as willingly as the left once he'd converted to Trumpism and religionism for his own ends. There really is a deep deep malaise in these people.
