Starmer's vision quest

It was observed some time ago that Starmer was trying to be both centrist and left right wing, which could explain to some extent the mess he finds himself in.

Reckon Starmer could get a lot of extra support from 16 & 17-y-o's (and those who were that age when their EU citizenship was removed) if he restored their right to travel freely in the EU with a youth mobility scheme. You can be pretty sure that neither the Tories nor Reform are going to promise that.

Many commentators saying the 16-18 are more likely to bote Labour but I think it's that they are more likely to bote left leaning & environmental.

I suspect Greens will be main "beneficiaries", maybe Fruit & Nut gaining some.

Starmer intensely dislikes Abbot. She's Labour to the core where Starmer seems to the right of many Conservative Governments and Starmer demands everybody blindly do as he says, when he says, how he says, etc.

She managed to stand at the last election despite Starmer's efforts.

But I suspect the timing will make Corbyn's Fruit & Nut Party more likely and that could damage Labour as Labour voters move to a more left-leaning party.

I think that's where Starmer could use 'youth FoM' as a selling point against the eurosceptic Corbyn (I don't think he'd feel any need to play unenthusiastic lip service to the 'globalist EU' as a non-Labour candidate).

I don't know. Probably depends on who joins to stand. Zarah Sultana doesn't come across as a "Crusty Old Commie". Bound to be more established longer standing politicians in the creation and thus disproportionate older members in the early days.

Corbyn got more votes in General Election as leader than Starmer.

I think that's where Starmer could use 'youth FoM' as a selling point against the eurosceptic Corbyn

For those youngsters interested in the scheme it will help but I suspect it will be limited numbers (interested and places) and broader issues might have a bigger effect eg climate & environment.

Apparently it includes a "mutual defence"? where if Germany is attacked UK will come to its defence and if UK attacked Germany will come to our defence .... uuuum .... anybody remember NATO? and Article 5 (and even if Northern Mexico reneged on that, other NATO members would honour it).

Sounds to me like another of the useless meaningless deals Starmer keeps making and expecting to be praised gor.

Given the previous administration's attitude to EU nations (e.g. Truss not wanting to answer if France was an enemy or not), I'd suggest that these things are less about the detail but more about the change in direction/atmosphere. If Starmer can convince both France and Germany that the UK is not only no longer untrustworthy but actually a reliable ally, then that's progress.
