i presume he had no other option but to go for a constituency which was very pro brexit.

My understanding is that the sitting MP was on Burnham's team, tasked with trying to persuade some MP to stand aside.
They all refused and told him that if it was such a great idea he should give up his own seat.
Eventually it was the only option

It's telling that he's homeless now, having burnt all his bridges with Labour, allying with Trump & the US, at last is current-Tory in all but name (he's bypassed Major-style Toryism to go for Reform-tribute Toryism), but calls himself a 'centrist'. Lordy knows what his next policy focus will be. Lizard people?
