My understanding is that the sitting MP was on Burnham's team, tasked with trying to persuade some MP to stand aside.
They all refused and told him that if it was such a great idea he should give up his own seat.
Eventually it was the only option

So is Blair trying to use reverse psychology to support Burnham? IIRC Burnham started as a blairite.
