There is also the three P's though. P&O are not the only show in town when it comes to crossing the Channel.

Is three P's a reference to Portsmouth, Poole and Plymouth?.

That's a different market to Dover - Dunkerque/Calais; much longer crossings. Arriving at Ouistreham, Le Havre, Cherbourg etc has advantages but using the the A13 and then either A86 or La Francilienne to circumnavigate Paris ain't that slow.

P&O are a tiny tiny tiny part of the DP World operation and will have so far had zero to contribute in profit since the earlier unpleasantness of the sackings.

They own a lot of major ports among other interests and this is where the profits are from.

The story is not what it seems.

Bit like BP and Shell?, to mention but two.

Normally we'd have gone with P&O Hull - Zeebrugge and return the same route.

This year we went out with DFDS Newcastle - Amsterdam and return via Eurotunnel.

Hull - Zeebrugge used to be considerable cheaper (I don't know about this year, I never looked as I wasn't going to be going with P&O), gave a shorter drive and an earlier start in Europe, the only downside being a longer drive in the UK.

You may already know this, in which case, sorry…..

DFDS Newcastle - Amsterdam sometimes have ‘specials’ buried in their brochure, with big savings. For example, one year, they had an offer of a camping holiday, which consisted of 14 campsite vouchers and a return ferry crossing, for only 50% of the ‘normal’ ferry fare. No checking if you actually camped, we used the offer to visit a friend in Sweden, and stayed with friend.

Although we live only 4 miles from the North Shields ferry terminal, without special offers, it is cheaper to drive to Dover or Folkestone and take short crossing or tunnel, particularly if heading south once across channel.

We normally use tunnel or DFDS Dover-Dunkirk.

I knew it was more expensive, I just can't be bothered with driving anywhere near London. This year was actually the first time I've used a short crossing, (so first time in the channel tunnel). If you consider a night on the boat to be part of the holiday it doesn't seem so expensive.

If going to Brittany or the Vendee it's usually Portsmouth-Caen.

I didn't know about the special offers, I'll keep an eye out.

Not surprised at all.

Despite all the flak I got at the time on the P&O thread, I told you all that no-one would really give a toss about the sacked sailors and would carry on using P&O anyway because they are convenient and cheap.
Lots of you said people would vote with their feet and not use P&O ferries or their parent company shipping.

Well one of us was right eh?

Let's all bow down to our intellectual superior despite running away when things when sour for him on the NHS front shall we?
