I wonder if McVey will stick her oar into Universal Credit again. That'd be great, because the system isn't totally screwed enough as it is already.

Interesting view. Do you think UC should be replaced with a new system of benefits, or, revert to the previous system?

I can only speak for myself regarding Universal Credit. The system is inaccessible, confusing and run by people who, sure are doing their jobs but try and get a straight answer out of them and be met by omerta.

As for the previous system, I had to help family and friends negotiate all manner of bulls!t to get them the help they needed. So I know that's a hellscape too.

And I hate the word "benefits" almost as much as I hate the term "Job Centre", and "Work Coach". My last one was lovely, but we spent more time talking about our nail polish and her holidays than anything actually meaningful.

I can identify with a lot of that. I have recently had cause to negotiate the benefit system and the “Healthcare” system. Why do they need to ask the same basic questions over and over again?, don’t they have computers, don’t they talk to each other? They could learn a thing or too from the average online retailer.

Mmm, I remember you saying on another thread.

The most frustrating thing I found was when I actually spoke to an actual person (a rarity in the UC game), despite the fact she'd been dealing with all the documentation I'd sent through she kept asking me about things I'd already clarified.

It's all bonkers.

I think she'll have her work cut out for her as minister for Commons Stench.

I doubt she, or any other Conservative Minister is going to have time to re-jig something as complex as UC before they are voted out. But, sadly, lack of “joined up thinking” is not a uniquely Tory “quality”.

They'll try, but you're probably right, Mel Strudel and his DWP cronies are hacking away at the disability benefits system in preparation...
Those claiming for health and disability reasons are really going to suffer for example after the proposed scrapping of Work Capability Assessments for those claiming Universal Credit, instead putting people at the mercy of the PIP assessments which is not necessarily a work related assessment and isn't a means tested benefit anyway so will be flawed. It is a disaster waiting to happen and the extra capacity at the assessment centres when there are already reassessment backlogs still ongoing from the COVID situation, yet to be resolved will only further agitate the issue. The DWP are claiming £4bn would be saved. That's only because people such as those waiting for an operation and are living in constant pain and claim UC will be told to look for a job or face sanctions, which is the likely outcome. Thank god the waiting lists are miniscule, oh... I often wonder how long it'll be before the health minister suggests the NHS are to reuse syringes because that would save money, maybe top and tailing with someone in bed in a "world leading" attempt to reduce hospital waiting lists. Crikey, I've just thought of another. Why not take the tents that are confiscated off of the homeless recently and give them to patients at hospital so they can sleep out on hospital grounds when there are no beds available. This is also better for the environment rather than chucking the tents in land fill and will help towards our zero carbon future! Christ, maybe I am a Tory!
