I think it is aimed to grab votes from those fools near the bottom who need to hate those actually at the bottom.

A bit like Brexit and Trumpism though to be fair Trumpism is hate for hates sake.

More fiction from Adam?

No - an image from an opinion piece in the Times. They seem to be alluding to Liz Kendall's conference speech stating that Labour would ensure that everyone who can work, does work. It just fails to note that Kendall's speech suggests transforming employment support and pouring millions into mental health support.

It seems to wilfully ignore the difference between beating someone with a stick to get them to work and asking someone what support they need to get back into work.

Cough, cough.

"but would have to take up a guaranteed job offer or lose their state support."
Dated, and more than slightly different anyway.
Maybe they can add Starmers wind turbine installing to the old loft insulation community work program standby job.

My apologies...you'd like to think they've changed since then

There was a consultation which ended in October on amending the work capability assessment which is used for Employment Support Allowance and Universal Credit. The tories rationale for the review being that it no longer matters if you can't propel a wheelchair 50 metres or go a week without shiteing yourself or can't leave your house due to anxiety because you can just work from home.

I see you've not met New Labour before.

Welcome yourself into the new modern crisis
-42k for one of my kid's school. The government / LA / state sector is unable to provide an education for my other child so I'm already losing out significantly by having to home educate them. You'd think they could take the money they're saving by doing eff all for one of them and put it towards looking after the other but I don't think that's how it works. Losing even more funding is certainly not going to help other families in our position.

So if you're so disabled or Mentally Ill that you cannot work you may have to do so from home nonetheless:

https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2023/nov/21/disabled-people-work-from-home-laura-trott-benefits

The £4680 mentioned is the amount paid to claimants who have demonstrated that they have Limited Capability for Work AND Work related Activity. If you have some prospect of return to the workplace you only have Limited Capability for Work and are expected to do stuff to get you back into the workforce. You don't get £4680 or any other extra sum beyond what's paid to those who are fit and seeking work.

As somebody said on the radio this morning this might look enlightened if applied to the right people (a small cohort I suspect) but a few hard cases in the papers will see it exposed for the performative cruelty it is.
