So if you're so disabled or Mentally Ill that you cannot work you may have to do so from home nonetheless:
Yep, cos everyone knows that people with a disability are just workshy scroungers who aren't interested in getting a job.
There are just shedloads of jobs out there for people with physical and mental disabilities.

I hear that there are a number of jobs in Conservative central office for people who can neither see things, hear them, or remember them.

It's an ingrained mindset that 'those' people are workshy scroungers, isn't it?

I'm off shortly to volunteer with refugees; most of them want to work, earn money and pay taxes. I know several people with disabilities who would love to work too.

Tories always feel the desire to beat out of work people with a stick rather than seeing them as a valuable resource.

The £4680 mentioned is the amount paid to claimants who have demonstrated that they have Limited Capability for Work AND Work related Activity. If you have some prospect of return to the workplace you only have Limited Capability for Work and are expected to do stuff to get you back into the workforce. You don't get £4680 or any other extra sum beyond what's paid to those who are fit and seeking work.

As somebody said on the radio this morning this might look enlightened if applied to the right people (a small cohort I suspect) but a few hard cases in the papers will see it exposed for the performative cruelty it is.

I resemble this. My UC is currently being reviewed. I'm being asked to provide all kinds of information about my life which is super fun.

"You were unable to attend any meetings with your work coach for a period of two months last year, why is that?"

"It clearly tells you why on my journal."

"Yes, but I need you to tell me?"

"Why?"

"For our records."

"It's literally written there. I'm looking at the reason now. What more do you want?"

"The reason you were unable to attend the appointments."

"Seriously? Because all I'm going to do is read out what I've already written. And has been assessed and accepted."

"No, we need the reason."

"... For f*ck sake."

Good job there are all these "work from home" jobs going spare then!!!

maybe that is what the driverless cars are being invented for
so a disabled person can sit at home and drive a taxi from there
maybe riderless bike will be next so they can get a job with Deliveroo??

Is this just checking up or have you been referred on 'cos they think there's something fishy about your claim?

They seem to think so. I've complied with every hoop they've asked me to jump through. But asking me to remember who I sold some bike wheels to three years ago? That's taking the proverbial.

Nope. They've got access.

And they're definitely trying to catch me out.

It is called harassment. Staff also get harrassed if they do no achieve. That is why near half a million claimants per year get sanctioned, sanctioning with a benefit reduction being the most common 'achievement'.

I'm aware. And I've been sanctioned because of the ludicrous requests made of me.

"We need a letter from your bank confirming this account is closed."

"I've given you that."

"It doesn't have the exact date on it."

"This is what the bank gave me, it's signed and on letter-headed paper."

"You need to request a new one."

"I can only do that in branch. The nearest one is 5 miles from me. And they're just going to give me the same thing again."

The whole system is totally f*cked, and it seems like it's only going to get worse. I'm fortunate that I have internet access at home, because if you don't you're doomed. And even if you do, the journal system only allows PDF documents to be uploaded, so if you've got JPEGs? No chance. Oh, and there's a limit on the number of files you can upload in one go. And the whole thing relies on someone there end allowing you to actually upload documents in the first place.

Very true, but, I think that your biggest bit of "good fortune" is that you appear to be technology literate and intelligent, how do some of the "not so bright", or "elderly" deal with all this stuff?

To a degree, it is similar for those in (low paid) work. Daughter No4 is a Health care Worker on minimum wage. She has a "proper" job, and, tops up her earnings with Agency work. All of her interaction with her both sets of employers, from shift rotas, obtaining shifts, expense claims, training updates etc etc are conducted via internet. £25/month for a Broadband contract may not. seem a lot, but, it is when you are minimum wage earning, paying full rent, council tax etc it is a significant bill, plus, of course, the need for a tablet or laptop.

Exactly. To use a personal example, the last time I visited a Job Centre, there were computer monitors on a desk, not plugged into anything and without a keyboard or mouse. Brilliant.

It's a farcical system that almost seems designed to fail.

The bare minimum allowance on UC, as I understand it, is just over £300. Which is ridiculous.
