Jon Sopel has apologised for mocking Nigel Farage over the closure of his Coutts account, which has increased pressure on the BBC to address its handling of the story.

Mr Sopel, the corporation’s North America editor until 2021, said earlier this month that Mr Farage “must feel like a bit of a Charlie” after the BBC reported that his account was closed for financial, rather than political, reasons.

But after The Telegraph revealed that Coutts cited differing “values” as a contributing factor to the account closures, Mr Sopel wrote on Twitter: “Dear Nigel, always believed when I get things wrong, I own up to it.

“I got it wrong. Sorry. That will teach me to trust reporting of my old employer. If your political views were even part of the reason why account was suspended from Coutts that is totally reprehensible.”

Mr Farage accepted his apology wholeheartedly

It would appear that Natwest have apologised for the comments, but the substantive reasons for closing his account stand.
"No individual should have to read such comments and I apologise to Mr Farage for this. I have written to him today to make that apology and reiterate our offer of alternative banking arrangements."

Dear Mr Farage,
I am writing to apologise for the deeply inappropriate comments about yourself made in the now published papers prepared for the Wealth Committee. I would like to make it clear that they do not reflect the view of the bank.
I believe very strongly that freedom of expression and access to banking are fundamental to our society and it is absolutely not our policy to exit a customer on the basis of legally held political and personal views. To this end, I would also like to personally reiterate our offer to you of alternative banking arrangements at NatWest.
I fully understand yours and the public’s concern that the processes for bank account closure are not sufficiently transparent. Customers have a right to expect their bank to make consistent decisions against publicly available criteria and those decisions should be communicated clearly and openly with them, within the constraints imposed by the law.
To achieve this, sector wide change is required, but your experience, highlighted in recent days, has shown we also need to put our own processes under scrutiny too. As a result I am commissioning a full review of the Coutts processes for how these decisions are made and communicated, to ensure we provide better, clearer and more consistent experience for customers in the future.
The review will be reporting to me as NatWest Group CEO.
I welcome the FCA’s reviews of regulatory rules associated with Politically Exposed Persons, and we will implement the recommendations of our review alongside any changes that they or the Government makes to the overall regulatory framework.

The titled chief executive of a major clearing bank has been forced to publicly apologise to a customer.
Obviously nothing to see here, it's that bloody Farage telling porkies again.

Farage has said that Coutts were forced into it by the treasury. All they have apologised for is the comments in the minutes that he obtained, pretty much all of which were factual and based on reportage of Farage (and much of which was generated by Farage himself directly or indirectly).

They have also said that they will not reinstate him and have again offered him a Natwest account. Nigel by return is still frothing.

It follows days of mounting public and political pressure, with Rishi Sunak intervening to warn it “wouldn’t be right if financial services were being denied to anyone exercising their right to lawful free speech”. The home secretary, Suella Braverman, called the decision “sinister”.

It's lucky that no-one has been denied financial services based on whether they have exercised their lawful right to free speech. They just stopped owing the bank money and weren't rich enough to continue having a bank account reserved for the rich and powerful - so they got offered an ordinary bank account. Like ordinary people have.
