Just the name choice gives an insight into Thiel's thinking. For those who don't know, a palantir is a seeing stone in Lord of the Rings. A kind of crystal ball that allows to see into others of the same kind scattered across Middle Earth. Sauron uses one of them to trick Saruman into doing his bidding. They are meant to be bloody dangerous things not to be played with.
