Welcome yourself into the new modern crisis
I can understand why the republicans have had to go with trump

but I cannot understand why the Democrats have not brought someone younger up through the ranks to stand against him

I can see the point in people thinking Biden is getting too old - but SURELY he has to be better than trump

Isn't the incumbent always going to stand for a second term? If they replace him then it's like they're admitting he's doing a poor job. They should have planned for an eight year presidency in the first place.

The whole system seems messed up. The idea that someone can be president or governor, with no experience, on the back of being a businessman, film star or whatever, is so odd. If you have the money for a campaign you can run. They don't seem to do the work yourself up through government thing so much. It's very personality centred, not policy centred.

The assumption that the vice president will be the next candidate for president also means that a party is basically committing to 2 specific individuals for the next 12 or 16 years, which isn't sensible either.

Perhaps it's the nature of modern politics in big countries like the US. Unless you're already on the public radar and in the media, you won't get a look in.

Six geese a-laying,
Five golden rings,
Four calling birds,
Three French hens,
Two turtle doves
And a grifter in a collar three.

It has surprised me how those further down the food chain seem to be holding out for so long.

Meanwhile, following recent reports of how Trump plans to retaliate against his opponents should he be reelected, he has now openly voiced using the federal government to punish his critics.

The problem is that last time it took him a while to get the nag of what he could and couldn;t do
and how to get rid of the people who stopped him just doing anything

by which time he was getting close to the next election and that got in the way

Next time - if he gets in - he will have only 2 aims
a) revenge - destroy anyone who ever did anything he didn;t like - ever - just destroy them
b) extend the term for as as long as possible

the economy and all that will come a distant third

IMO

I think you are right; it will be interesting to see how he tries to extend his term. Will he find a way to finally a third term? Make the presidency hereditary? Make himself president for life?

There'd be people who would support all of those.

The third term thing is done via an amendment
and amendments can be changed

except the Holy Second
of course

few little tweaks here and there

I am presuming that quite a few Western (and other) leaders - and their Security and Defence leaders - will have been laying contingency plans

Becaus eif he gets in again then the "leadership" of the USA has just gone out of the window and it will become an unpredictable obstruction and never a reliable ally - possibly for a long time

Santos faces a motion to expel him from Congress, but there will not be an immediate vote as the house Republicans decided to break up early for Thanksgiving.

Meanwhile the Trump appointed judge Aileen Cannon is doing her best to help Trump in his Mar A Lago hearing. Having previously had orders overturned on appeal, she is now buggering about Jack Smith's team concerning classified information procedure disclosures and delaying disclosure dates. She intends to revisit the matter March 24, for a hearing scheduled in May 24. - When no doubt she will then delay the May date. With other hearings, Trump will not face a trial for stealing classified documents until after 2024.
