The immigration minister Robert Jenrick told Times Radio: “Gary Lineker is paid for by the British taxpayer and it is disappointing that he is so far out of step with the British public."

WE'll be the judge of that, thankyouverymuch.

Robert Jenrick is also paid by the taxpayers, and if he looked at recent opinion polls he would see just how out of step with public opinion he is.

Immigration is what won Brexit. It is all really they have left, post destroyed Britain.

The worrying thing is that the right wing press are so much in cahoots on this that it distorts reality if it, even at the BBC

It's also wrong and somewhat hypocritical. Lineker is not necessarily solely paid for by the tax payer. Firstly the BBC get money from licensing, merchandising and worldwide rights to broadcast their programmes. Secondly Jenrick's government are doing their best to axe the TV licensing fee and government funding. Thirdly Lineker is not paid by the BBC but by Gary Lineker Media which is a company that the BBC have contracted for services.

And of course he isn't out of step with the British Public. Jenrick is confusing Lineker with Suella Braverman and the current Government.

Fourthly.
Lineker actually took in refugees in his own home. Far more than most people have done, so that gives him far more right to comment than people who have done nothing.

If he's not a BBC political journalist he should be free to comment on any issue he likes. It's not like his impartiality on the football is affected by his pontificating on the price of milk or on anything else.

Quite!
And the hilarious thing is that sport is an area where opinionated peanuts partial pundits are viewed as quite desirable by most media outlets ...

That's pretty much it. Exactly.

Lineker is a retired professional footballer who has moved on to be a commentator, presenter and pundit.

Provided he's not punting his views about current affairs whilst actually on MOTD etc they're no business of the BBC still less of half arsed work experience Ministers like Jenrick.

Looks like he's pretty much told the BBC to do one anyway!

He probably doesn’t care if they sack him. He’s loaded and can work elsewhere. He already works for BT. And has a successful podcasting company. He owns Goalhanger podcasting which makes the excellent “The rest is politics” podcast.

Well that really is an interesting one isn't it, what exactly IS being out of step, or in step for that matter with the British public.

Is it the choice of government that is currently in power or perhaps the decision to be part of Europe or not, what exactly IS being in step?

Kinda hard to tell when the electoral system rewards 42% of the vote with an 80 seat majority.

Of course Lineker is right. Once a government starts changing laws to match their agenda and describing those who disagree as unpatriotic and abandon organisations like ECHR it gets dangerous. Between 1933 and 1939 everything the Nazis did to persecute the Jews and others they viewed as "non aryan" was legal in Germany because they had changed the laws and silenced their opposition. One of Hitlers first acts in 1933 on being made chancellor was to leave the League of Nations.. a pretty toothless organisation but one who fought for human rights.
