Surely it's an advantage of FPTP that small extremist parties are kept out of power? Not so good for small parties with sensible policies I agree, but presumably if their ideas are good enough they will build a bigger following.

But at the price of allowing large extreme parties to gain absolute power vis our elective dictatorship.

Democratic socialist governments which have avoided the authoritarian route:
Denmark
Norway
Finland
Iceland
Netherlands
Ireland
Belgium
Spain
Portugal
Slovinia
Croatia
Armenia
Moldova
And Sweden before some of the electorate got the stupid and voted for a neo nazi party.

And still you are telling us the electorate are stupid!

I really can't understand how even after Brexit you think the way to win people over is to abuse the electorate. Remember what Gordon Brown did

Setting yourself up as superior to the thick electorate is just not going to work.

The large majority of Brexit voters were actually working class people who you think are thick and bigotted. My guess is they are exactly the same constituency of voters that you support so wholeheartedly when it comes to strikes. I assume they are thick and bigotted only when they behave in a way that you disagree with?

Are Ukip in power today? At their best electoral showing, under PR, they would have had 80 MP's out of 350. Enough to wield influence, if not hold the balance of power. PR would have helped them enormously.

If it wasn't for UKIP, we'd still be in the EU - they were 100% successful in their goal and have no further reason to exist....

I know several on here are in favour of electoral reform and/or proportional representation. I guess the Swedish result is the outcome of PR. One advantage of first past the post is that it keeps minority parties from having any role in a coalition and makes it harder for single issue parties to achieve much, other than publicity.

From this weeks results, it looks likely that the Islamic Nyans party will be on track to get a parliamentary seat next time too, though they haven't this time.

I would rather have a parliament that more accurately reflects the views of the population (however distasteful) and where people feel their vote is of value rather the the gross distortions that fptp delivers.

You can make the same argument about distortion with PR where a party with few votes is involved in a coalition and makes outrageous demands which other party has to accept to retain power.
Its an argument that can be made for any voting system, depending on the situation selected as an example

The only fair democratic system is one man one vote...as long as I am the one man^_^^_^

I'm beginning to think you're stupid, lazy or both.

I specifically said all people who vote for a neo Nazi party are either racist, gullible or stupid.
I have given my reasons clearly.
I didn't say "the electorate are stupid" just the ones who vote for neo Nazis.
I said some people who voted leave probably did it for stupid reasons, e.g racism or they believed the lies being told to them, i.e gullibility.
How you came to the conclusion that I somehow think that I am "superior" to the working class is quite remarkable.

QED, however, I'm definitely superior to you.

P.S when quote replying to a post, make sure you do it to the right one.

You quote replied to my list of countries with non authoritarian socialist governments, which makes your reply look totally out of context, and stupid.

my list of countries with non authoritarian socialist governments

The countries, particularly the Scandi ones, are based on a model of capitalism, some public ownership, free market economics and strong support for social welfare policies. They are run as I would hope a strong Labour Party would aim for.

They are as much, if not much more, capitalist as/than socialist, and much the better for it imo.

One could almost use the word centrist to describe them, but that is a dirty word to many.

Countries which have mixed economies with strong socialist foundations and principles. Something that Corbyn and McDonnall championed.

Nothing wrong with that.
