To me, vision quests are all part of the tragedy of first-past-the-post electoral systems. The Labour vision swing seems to have gone as follows:
- Tony Blair — New Labour firebrand
- Jeremy Corbin — Old Labour wet blanket
- Keir Starmer — The Labour brand without the fire
All in all, a swinging time: if only a governing party would have the courage to introduce thoroughgoing proportional representation all serious parties would have some influence on policy and decent policies could be evolved with time-horizons going out to 50 years or so. It don't mean a thing if all you do is swing.
