It's an expensive hobby watching football.

Born in 1962, he would have been 18 in 1980, a quick Google suggests a paper round would have paid between £5 and £15 a week, depending how many papers and if it was morning/evening/weekend or both/all. Beyond that, he would have been at University presumably, and, in those days, had a grant, and, if lucky, a job in a bar (rather than at the Bar).

It's cheaper to go to the opera than see my local team.

The Tottenham Hotspur chairman once tried to justify the prices by saying it was no dearer than a West End show.

Fine as far as it goes, but in the West End you are guaranteed a world class performance, whereas at White Hart Lane you are jot guaranteed anything of the sort.

Starmer doesn't bother me much one way or the other, but the fact he's a Gooner is not in his favour.
