That is what he means by 'take back our streets', right?
I doubt it. No-one has proposed banning all vehicles. That would be silly.

What else could he possibly mean? Reaffirming the right to protest? Protecting the right to congregate? Enforcing planning rules so local grocers aren't sticking up those massive awning things made out of pallets left right and centre?

If only there were some sort of explainer...

Within a decade, our mission means we will:
  • Halve the level of violence against women and girls.
  • Halve the incidents of knife crime.
  • Raise confidence in every police force to its highest levels.
  • Reverse the collapse in the proportion of crimes solved.

The point is that it doesn't matter what he actually means, it's such a loaded phrase with right wing authoritarian connotations that he really isn't doing himself any favours using it. Look at the rhetoric from the current government around the homeless, immigrants, protests etc.

How many people reading a tweet are going to go to the Labour website to investigate the nuance?

I agree. It looks like nonsense.

What do you think most people care about in relation to 'the streets'?

It could either be an echo of Braverman's fight against the homeless...but unlikely given their condemnation of her rhetoric, or it could be crime.

It's kind of obvious what it is, especially given that one of Labour's attack lines concerns the Tory record on all aspects of the CJS

Laudable, perhaps optimistic, aims re the stats, but no detailed explanation of how they are going to do it. The full briefing talks about putting specialists into the law and police systems to clear backlogs and help victims; good ideas but it's not going to halve the rape stats. Looks reluctant to put figures on the cost, perhaps understandably.

Between this and the King's Speech it's striking how much UK politics on both sides has been reduced to one line soundbites really.

That's how Labour policy works ;-)

(Not dissimilar to Tory policy - see the 40 new hospitals for details)

Remember - this is just promises to try to get you to vote. Not stuff they can actually do.
I've been looking into Starmer's promise to charge VAT on private school fees within the first year of office. Most think it's unachievable in that time line if ever. It requires an Act of Parliament, so it has to be tabled and go between the Lords and the Commons several times and get passed each time in both houses. Previous attempts to reform VAT have failed for that reason. Then it can only be imposed for the start of the academic year. Experts think the earliest is likely to be September 2026. Happily by that point I'll only have one child left in school.
