Matt Hancock, Boris Johnson, Rees-Mogg and many a Tory coin it in whilst in office.

So?, does that make it right?

Sure but Labour purported to hold themselves to a higher standard.

All this might end up being useful if it tightens up the whole donor thing and forces transparency on where the money that's donated is really being spent.

What's really obvious is there needs to be more transparency and detail about where these cash donations are spent. Bridget Phillipson got £14k from Lord Ali. But it definitely wasn't for a birthday party.

She's very keen to point out that all the bribes donations she's accepted have been as part of her job.

Except the Taylor Swift tickets of course, they were for her kid.

Personally, I am not unduly concerned about where the donations are being spent (or used, if they are "things" like clothes, holiday, etc), but, rather just what the Donor is getting in return.

Strong agree. Very curious about what Lord Alli is getting out of his bountiful generosity. Maybe we are being too cynical and it's all altruism.

If it's a free holiday you could go down the route of 'He's a friend'. Those tickets were like gold dust though and I doubt Swifty had anything to do with who got them so you really have to ask why companies would be dishing them out if not to have access to, or influence with, an MP.

I'm looking forward to the Swift/Labour memes. She did a whole album called 'Red' so maybe she's a socialist on the quiet...

Well it's pretty clear they ARE living up-to a higher standard.

They don't need to be 100% squeaky clean to achieve that. Not by a looooong way. This is the real world, get a grip.

Not really. All of the gifts have been declared in accordance with the rules as far as we are aware. There's a big difference between following the rules, or attempting to follow the rules and not trying to follow rules at all until you are caught out (see Boris Johnson for details).

I agree that it isn't a great look but most of the "noise" is from desperate Tory MPs, GB News and the Daily Fail trying to bleat out "Look- they are just as bad as us - look they accepted a suit and a taylor swift ticket" and strangely forgetting all of the absurdly much higher priced donations that Tory MPs were able to take (or not able and had to pay back once caught).
