Fück me, I had low expectations with this lot, but they've managed to fall even below that.

Again, I think this is trying to drag a story out from where there is none. The only "link" is to the Quadrature Climate Foundation which is a charitable venture started by Quadrature Capital. Kyte is a member of the advisory board which has no decision making powers precisely because of her leadership and knowledge in the climate space.

You could also paint it as - it's better to have an envoy with knowledge who has a seat at the table. Obviously Quadrature themselves donated money to get links with labour to lobby for policies that will favour them - that's the dodgy bit. The fact that they own the charity is a strong link etc.

But it's the way the Government has to work apparently. The alternative would be to refuse the donations and lose the election so that we have the real grifters and trough waders in charge.

You only have to look at the US to see how it escalates up into absolute absurdity, where the presidential election in 2020 cost $6.5 billion and the congressional election $9.9 billion.

Depressing reading.

I think Monkers put this on another thread by mistake:

Why am I sometimes so very stoopid?

Gifts, Entertainment & Hospitality

The Bribery Act does not prohibit the giving or receipt of gifts, entertainment and hospitality provided that they are proportionate to the services being offered or received and fall within the reasonable bounds of value and occurrence.

Circumstances which are never permissible include:-

v A quid pro quo gesture, of something being offered in return for something else.

v Gifts in the form of cash or cash equivalence.

v Entertainment of a sexual or similarly inappropriate nature.

Circumstances that will usually be acceptable include:-

v Modest and occasional meals with a person with whom we do business.

v Occasional attendance at ordinary sporting or cultural events.

v Gifts of a nominal value, such as pens or small promotional items.

For an allegation of wrongdoing, evidence is not only required that gifts were sent and received, but also that something inappropriate was reciprocated.

What is alleged to have been reciprocated to Lord Alli?

To anyone who says that the optics are poor, I'm inclined to agree. No doubt the no smoke without fire brigade will attend.

So let's get down to the nub of this: do you think Rayner has been as profligate and/or corrupt in accepting gifts as her predecessor(s)?

Exactly.

People were critical of Beverley Allitt but she was nowhere near as profligate as Harold Shipman with her treatments.

Having spent years rightly criticising the Tories for their corruption and avarice Labour should have have expected the spotlight to be on them and were stupid to give the Tories and especially their conniving press partners ammunition to attack them for the same reason.

Sadly it is naive in the extreme to expect politicians/governments to be above corruption and greed, and hypocrisy, whether they purport to be capitalist or socialist. They are people with flaws but let us hope that Starmer/Rayner et al can learn from this and at least hide their flaws a bit better in future.

Nope. He worked for a finance magazine then made his first amount of loot as an investment banker. Then left that world and went into entertainment where he made his second amount of loot forming Planet24 which he sold to Carlton. Then he got involved with Shine and ASOS which he sold his stake in for a load of cash and formed Silvergate media. He's also involved with SMG.

However he only ever seems to have used his political position to lobby for gay rights.

I see you read the same web page as I did 😊

Given that he does appear to have been born with the proverbial “silver spoon”, it seems reasonable to think that without the Investment Banker loot, the subsequent loot raising exploits would not/could not have happened.

He may have used his political position to lobby for gay rights, thus, but, as @monkers suggested, there may be a new motive.
