Surprise, surprise

Chagos deal arrange by Starmers buddy lawyers and former Mauritian prime minister -who has now is being investigated for money laundering scandal.

I wonder how much money has already been slipped out of the UK to sweeten the deal

I think that scenario is a long way off. It's not that we will need nuclear codes to defend against a Russian attack, it's that our continent will be destabilised by a Russian push westwards to retake its former empire. And it's not even certain that the Russians could succeed, it's the mere fact that they might try.

This looks very much like 1936 with a belligerent expansionist country being appeased and an isolationist US. Only this time it's much worse because the people leading the US are fascists trying to destabilise European countries

...and the weirdest and stupidest people in the world are Trump supporters in the UK. Not-so-crypto fascist, Nigel Farage, must be creaming his pants.

Not Starmer per se, but is anyone else getting a little tired of the right-wing witch hunt of Reeves?

Maybe you can clarify for me 'cos I'm totally confused. Did she spend the best part of a decade at the Bank of England (as she claimed in a speech in Feb 2024 "I spent the best part of a decade as an economist at the Bank of England." (https://labour.org.uk/updates/press-releases/rachel-reeves-speech-at-labours-business-conference/) or did she spend little over 5 years there as she now claims after BBC investigated?

nb the wrongdoings of one person do not make the wrongdoings of another right (whataboutism?).

If you look really carefully you'll see my post is making the point about the £45 bag.

Hardly up there with Zahawi's heated horse stables, is it. And remember...that was public money, nit HBOS money.

I'm not really into comparing wrongdoings.

But made me think back to not that long ago when Ms Louise Haigh was de-Ministered. Struck me that she had been open and honest and her offence (not public money) was long expired. No lies, no deception but Starmer wanted to be squeeky clean ... bit OTT in my view from what I saw reported about her wrongdoing, times and no deception.

That isn't what I'm doing. I'm comparing coverage.
To be honest I can't remember back to Zahawi's incident nor what else might have been happening around the same time given our news reporting seems a set bandwidth and what fills it depends on what is happening and who is reporting.

But both incidents further demonstrate the failings of our current politician classes. I'm no political analyst nor sociologist but I do suspect the increasing prominence of the far-right "strong man" is at least in part driven by failings of current political classes.

And the "who is reporting" is a tangent I find interesting as eg Channel 4 News was the organisation who have been investigating the CoE abuse both some time back and over the last few weeks. And whilst Channel 4 have been investigating and revealing they have thus been giving their story high prominence and a lot of coverage compared to other mainstream TV news which might briefly mention the same story. I regard it as an important story but it also highlights nthe variability in what news items are covered and how much coverage they are given.

There's a reason why you don't remember Zahawi and it isn't because of other distractions. It's because it didn't gather the same wall-to-wall coverage, despite the sums involved being thousands of times greater, and it being public money.
