Yep - my daughter was interested in training as a doctor. She has already been told that because of the sheer amount of competition for places, it's barely worth trying for as she "only" has 10 Grade 8 GCSEs including Further Maths and one Grade 7 (11 Grade As in old money but no A* s)

The problem is that it's been this way for decades and nothing has been done about it. When I studied for A-Levels 20 odd years ago we had several straight A students apply to read Medicine. None of them got offers from any of their six allowed choices. If I remember correctly it was around 10-12 applicants per available place at the time.

Indeed. The benefit of small class sizes, having a nurse on-site and a nurses office with refrigeration for insulin was absolutely wonderful in dealing with my daughters anxiety and Type 1 diabetes. Many of the girls have benefitted from this. I know of one very shy girl who moved school after becoming a refuser and anorexic. She has now blossomed into an extremely bright, healthy young lady with a bright future ahead of her.

The annoying bit from my daughter's point of view is that if she had had the same scores with last years grade boundaries she would have had mostly 9s.

Life can be a bitch.

If last year's grade boundaries applied lots more kids would have had higher grades so the competition would have been just as tough.
