I think Craig is being deliberately provocative with his claim of 110k and my estimate for 'about as senior a nurse as you can get' would be probably band 8b which is up to about 65k.
Not wishing to start a row with you on this one, but I am an 8b (haven't I done well?), and I have a ton of registered nurses above me. Logically I would say 8c/d is the end of what you might call proper clinicians (Consultant nurses, Consultant Physios/Paramedics etc) and you are well into the stratosphere of nurses who only get reminded of what a patient looks like when they do a walk around with the Secretary of State!
It is the same in all areas of clinical work in the NHS there is no obvious and accessible route to progression to higher bands except for a very few people. I think that making those progressions more straight forward would be better than a pay rise. I know so many good clinicians who get promoted, and eventually they reach the very high bands and are completely s
hit at what they need to do. That is because they are excellent clinicians, brilliant with patients and diagnosing and treating, and particularly s
hit with endless reports, bids and management bollox. Ultimately they fail and are remembered as being useless, it is a very sad living and breathing example of the Peter Principle.
