Strike!

Train drivers are already on an average of £23 an hour, so why are they striking?

Train drivers are not on strike. However, they're well paid because of the responsibility they have. One mistake and many could be killed.

This is one of the things that the government are doing that is dishonest
They are stating average salaries - and max salaires - of Rail Workers - and are including the higher paid train drivers - and for all I know the bloomin' CEO

The people on strike are th elower paid people - OK not all on minimum wage - but when one side starts fiddling the figures then you have to wonder why they have to

On a similar note - I am a member of the NEU as I am an ex-teacher
I notice that they have sent a letter to the Minister of Education saying they intend balloting for strike action unless the government does something to address how much the salaries have been eroded over the years

Now - some history - there used to be the NUT (teachers only) and the ATL - which included lecturers and support staff such as TAs and technicians. The two merged some years ago and became the NEU which took over all the people previously eligible to be in the ATL - TAs etc

So - looking at the letter the word 'teacher(s)' occurs many times - then close to the end there is a single sentence including support staff

Now - TAs in particular have been at the very bottom end of the wage priority for many years. The teacher unions have a lot of power as teacher pay scales are nationally negotiated by the ministry (then paid by the schools!). TAs are normally employed on local scales and are much lower paid (and qualified TBF) and their wages have been eroded even more than teachers as they don;t have the political clout.
At my last school (and lots of other places) they have been 'moved' to a Term Time Only contract - and instant massive pay cut to lowly paid staff

I have written to the Union - and my MP - highlighting this and my opinion that support staff should be a main focus.

Addendum - TA stands for Teaching Assistant - just in case
They are critical to the functioning of classes - especially with SEN pupils and all primary classes.

Support staff are all too often forgotten, even by people who work with them every day and rely on them to be able to do their own jobs.

Television is a modern technological marvel. To get video from a camera into our home takes some of the most advanced systems using many standards that have taken years for engineers to design. It requires high speed processing of vast amounts of video data coupled with advanced image processing techniques to produce the sort of graphics and pictures that we now take for granted. Large sums of money and specialist expertise are utilised.

I believe John Logie Baird himself said, when he generated the first moving picture on a screen, "one day, this technology could even be used so some obnoxious daffodil can be seen asking inane questions about the significance of a photo of a plastic puppet"
