What you are effectively saying is spen saw sense and realised that arguing that 97 "insert reason here" was ridiculous given the circumstances and he might as well plead guilty.

I suppose that might have been worth a few quid in legal fees.

His lawyer probably told him that if he pled not guilty he'd be looking at a custodial given his previous, and that pleading guilty was likely to get him off with a fine and / or community order.
