That's a fair point, I imagine a Labour government will alter the law accordingly when they get in.

What are you talking about? What law? And altered to do what?

This law that requires the need to speak English, call it policy or criteria then or whatever the f*ck people are whining about.

You thick or something?

Pears v Apples alert.

One reason some people who've got as far as Europe might seek to come to the UK for Asylum is because they're from a place where English is the main second language. There are of course other reasons including family, or whatever degree, or wider kith/clan being established here.

The issue in this bit, ie introduced by post #202 is Afghan women. They are applying to join their husbands who are here legitimately, presumably after being given Asylum. I wasn't aware of this but apparently applicants for a spousal visa are supposed to be proficient in English. Maybe I should have grasped the point given the number of battered or otherwise abused spouses I've given advice to and who speak better English than I do but there you go....

It seems to me that, thinking in the way law treats people in other fields, we ought to apply the idea of 'reasonable adjustments' where there is a real reason why (say) Afghan women who lack the opportunity to be educated at all, never mind to fluent English, should be 'cut some slack'.

But I don't suppose that's 'fair' in the eyes of the right wind media who seem to have Ministers by the short and curlies...

I actually have some personal experience of this. My daughter-in-law (with a brown face), joined her husband (my Son No1) here in UK. There were various requirements, including the language skills, which were not particularly demanding. The most difficult requirements were the financial ones, I had to agree to finance her, if she failed to finance herself. I think, that requirement was for the first two years, I may be wrong, perhaps, I am still personally liable, should she fall "on hard times".

Careful now, we shouldn’t judge someone’s worth based on their English skills. They may have been denied a full education.

I type in the manner I speak in real life, "you f*ckin thick or summat?" would have been the question if sat face to face.

I'm fully aware 'Are you thick, or something' is more grammatically correct but it's far less 'personal' and I like personal when insulting someone.

Plus, I already live here so far less important.

I agree.

You think others should be judged to a standard that needn’t apply to you? I wonder if there’s a word for that.

You know you don't 'have' to be here listening to people 'whining' about deliberate cruelty being done to others.

You could just be out freely enjoying your lucky life and liberty, with no one persecuting you on account of your gender, skin colour, sexuality or whatever.

@shep gets his persecution fix on here, but, I don't think it bothers him ;)

Now where would the fun in that be?

Listening to you lot on here, well most, is one good way of ensuring I never vote anything other than Conservative no matter how bad they get.

So, despite the obvious damage the Conservatives are doing to the country, you're happy with what they're doing? That doesn't make sense to me at all.

I began my voting life as a Lib Dem supporter, but they gradually eroded my faith in them, so I switched to Labour who basically threw a grenade at themselves. Now I vote Green, which I know is seen as a wasted vote but I don't live in Scotland so I can't vote for the SNP.

Because he's not persecuted, is he.

He's free to do whatever he wants, but he chooses instead, to be here taking the piss out of anyone who is concerned, and who is trying to understand ways to make things a bit better.

What that says about him is up for interpretation.

But for some reason its really important to him that he never votes anything other than Tory, no matter how shysterish they get, and we're helping with that. 🙄

You're free to work out why that might be, and keep cheerleading his inanities.

I think I'll go find something more worthwhile to do 👍🏼
