You could even ask him if he feels persecuted, and if so, when and how.

If you're going to call people being challenged robustly on their political views, on a forum about politics, then I think we can safely conclude that we're all being persecuted on here..

I read the google definition, ie subject someone to hostility and ill-treatment, although, I would say the actions are "systematic" too.

unfair is subjective, to a degree,

cruel doesn't necessarily have to mean physical cruelty, belittling someone's educational attainment, or, IQ, for example, could be viewed as cruel, in my opinion. Not everyone is education to degree level, nor do they necessarily live in the leafy suburbs of the so called Home Counties.
