Meanwhile, the kraken Sidney Powel and Kenneth Cheseboro have triggered Georgia's early trial legislation and the DA Fani Willis has called them out by suggesting a 23 October trial date. It would seem the other defendants, Trump in particular, are not so keen.
Trump wants to delay and delay in the hope of being elected (I don't think he understands that a President cannot pardon themselves from State Charges only Federal ones, and even then it's an untested theory). No-one is quite certain of Cheesboro's play. He's not stupid though. It does seem that having had 2 years to prepare, the prosecution isn't blind sided by the request. Some seem to think that the Cheese wants a speedy trial so that he can get to the plea bargaining. His public statements trying to distance himself from Jan 6th and Trump are somewhat undermined by video footage showing him at the insurrection with a video camera filming Alex Jones.

It has been pointed out by political academics that there is nothing in their beloved written constitution to stop someone in prison from becoming President. So he could in theory still run and take office whilst inside.

But the 14th amendment has been getting publicity recently.
I think it was raised by the Jan 6 committee,, but there was a paper recently by a couple of academics who believe Trump could be excluded. A view supported by former Judge J Michael Luttig, who was a conservative member of the judiciary and Lawrence Tribe, a liberal minded legal scholar.
It seems whether Trump is on states' ballots is down to the state election officers. Which if he is included/excluded, may open up legal challenges.

Report on Times Radio this morning says there's a group trying to get Trump barred as a candidate. Apparently there was an amendment to the constitution after the Civil War, 14th?, to prevent those involved in 'insurrection' from standing.

EDIT: Cross posted with @Bazzer

His defence which he cannot use is, 'judge, the aim was simply to get money from more suckers. I had no insurrection, just money making verbals'.

An update to the posts concerning the 14th amendment.
A law suit has been filed by a tax lawyer in the Southern District of Florida, which seeks to disqualify Trump from the Florida State ballot by virtue of the 14th amendment. Florida is of course under the control of Trump's closest rival, (at least according to the polls), Ron Desantis.

2024 is looking to be a busy year in court for Trump.
In the Washington DC Federal hearing concerning Trump's efforts to disregard the 2020 election, Judge Chutkan has set a trial of 4 March 2024. (The special prosecutor wanted the 2nd of January, Trump's lawyers wanted April 2026).
Apparently in order to accommodate this date, the Federal judge held a discussion with the State judge who is presiding over the hush money payments made by Trump to the porn actress. So presumably this latter hearing will also be slotted in to 2024.

A nice timeline on the bbc website

He is going to be a busy boy

CLEARLY a dispicable and dastardly attempt to derail his TOTALLY unstoppable and popular run for re-election as the BEST PRESIDENT ever

or so he will say - probably in smaller words but louder and again and again and again and.......

They omitted one; 29 January 2024 the hearing date for his promotion of a pyramid scheme. :okay: Although, I don't know whether he would attend this as it is a civil and not a criminal hearing. And if at all possible, he seems to avoid any situation where he might be asked questions that require proper answers and not some BS.
I'd be surprised if he attended the E Jean Carroll defamation hearing in early January. At a hearing earlier this year, Trump was found to have sexually assaulted and on a separate occasion defamed the writer. - A decision he has appealed. So the January hearing, which originally was scheduled to hear a separate defamation made by Trump when he was President and which Carroll's lawyer successfully amended to include further comments made by Trump after the earlier hearing, should be a shot at a badly defended goal.

Seems that was a scam he got paid millions for. Reminds me of the sometimes dangerous stuff he was edging for during Covid.

Two things,

I think he'd jump at the chance to spout his usual nonsense, but his lawyers probably do all they can to keep him away from the courtroom.

It's going to be very interesting to see how he behaves when he must be in court for days at a time.

He'll probably get away with everything. He shouldn't, but then people buy into his base rhetoric.

Whatever the in's and out's of the Trump saga, it'll continue to dominate the USAnian news agenda basically drowning-out any political discourse. But what's scary whether Trump stands or not, loses or not, is in jail or not - is that there will still be a significant percentage of the population who believe he's the one true political messiah....
