If Russia is politically cornered it has now cornered itself because of it’s choice of violence rather than continued talking.
It is ironic that, at a time when, IMO, NATO, was facing its own existential challenges with the potential for reduced US support and no real likelihood that Ukraine would join, Russia’s actions have probably strengthened support for NATO and the possibility of more of Russia‘s neighbours wanting to join.
Looking back, there have been mistakes on both sides in stoking up the tensions over Ukraine, particularly since 2014, but none of that gets close to justifying what Russia has done.
