Yet more Tory sleaze….

I think it's a bit more nuanced than that.

The decision to destroy the cars was just the Home Office following records keeping policy. There would have been little impact, but the Conservative Government under Theresa May brought in very hostile legislation under the Immigration Act 2014 which then meant that the cards suddenly became invaluable.
So whilst it may have started under a labour government in terms of the "decision", it was the Conservatives who really built it into a problem by actually destroying the cards and peoples lives. The party of "law and order" strikes again. As to whether Theresa May can be considered a voice of reason, she was a weak Prime Minister. At least now she seems to be standing up for some principles.

I agree in part actually - the destroying of them was an admin decision that politicians had no input in to, so you can't blame either Labour or the Conservatives for it being done. It was only of significance later.

Part of the problem is that the Windrush generation were 'low hanging fruit' in terms of immigration. Far easier to hassle people who have been here for years and so were easy to track down than to find, for example, recent visa overstayers who have disappeared altogether. That's what you get when you outsource these things to the likes of Capita though.

I'd still pick May's brand of Conservatism over Johnson's, whatever her failings.

Don't muddle New Labour with the left 🙄

Well the Labour Party, in whatever grade of Socialism they are adorned in at the time, are regarded as 'the Left' to most people in the UK. Trying to distant itself from Blair and offer something else didn't work at the last election, so where do they go now? Further left?

A vote winner...bingo !

Yep, control of illegal immigration is a vote winner. Whether you think it's a manufactured crisis whipped up by the right wing press or of genuine concern, it is a vote winner. No use denying it or pretending it will go away.

True, but the more that it is highlighted that immigration issues are a fiction whipped up by the likes of Murdoch, Rothermere, Barclays and Boris, the more that views might start changing. The Ukrainian refugee crisis is the first time that refugees have been viewed as other than scum.

I don't think most people in the UK view refugees as scum. Many do draw a distinction between those they perceive as fleeing bombs and those they perceive as economic migrants who are already in the EU, or who are visa overstayers. Some might consider that each group is as worthy of consideration of residency as the other, but most people don't see it that way.

28,000 people crossed the Channel in 2021, with around 4,000 having crossed so far this year. I don't think it's a fictitious issue for most people.

I wonder what the difference is between a Ukrainian and a Syrian or Afghan...
Don't know. Can't quite put my finger on it...

Although to be fair it could also be due to the Europe / West placement of Ukraine.

Yvette Cooper was Shadow Home
Secretary when Labour MPs were whipped to abstain on Theresa May's Immigration Bill that led to the Windrush scandal.
Only six Labour MPs voted against it....
Corbyn, McDonnell, Abbott and Skinner were 4 of them.

It doesn’t matter though does it, you're still ruled by a Tory government. 🤣

Well as long as we're comparing apples with oranges let's see it through.
This is a letter printed in today's grauniad.

Excellent idea to equate Johnson’s fixed-penalty notice with a speeding fine (‘He was ambushed with cake’ and other stories: Tories get creative to defend PM, 19 April). Three more penalty notices and he will have 12 points on his licence and will be banned from parliament. He may also need to stand in a byelection to get his licence back. Bring it on.
