The Tories know exactly what there doing... deliberately putting refugees in Brexit/deprived areas and standing back and watching the flames. They won the last election on Brexit and the next one will more than likely be focused on the so called "migrant crisis" what else have they got.

Why mention the “alleged behaviour”.
Pathetic.
Seeking to justify their actions.
Almost like Trump with his “very fine people on both sides” comment

It’s classic victim blaming. It’s what the Tories do.

One cannot help but think that Tory grandstanding as the number one supporter of Ukraine is a continued attempt to take back control and hide the stink of corruption that also went side by side with the Russian influenced Brexit.

Rather like saying you totally condemn the unlicensed drunk driver in spite of the allegations that the cyclist was not wearing hi-vis etc etc etc

I'm starting to think that Raab should have his own thread, but here he is - grandstanding again:-

Raab seeks to force convicts to appear at sentencing

Mr Raab is having discussions with officials about how to bring about the changes.
He added officials were looking at how the move could be enforced because "you could be in a situation where you're physically having to manhandle somebody out of the cell".
"I wouldn't rule that out, but fundamentally, if a perpetrator is not willing to come and face the judge... then I think we should be looking at increasing the sentence as an aggravating factor," he said.
He told the BBC making convicts appear at sentencing hearings was "the very least the victims deserve and... a basic principle of British justice".

Yes, a basic principle of British Justice is apparently to be able to spit in the face of the guilty. This one had passed me by.
According to the HM Inspectorate of Probation:-
  • There are four key principles of procedural justice: voice, neutrality, respect and trust. Adherence to these principles is linked to improved compliance and positive outcomes.
Or the House of Lords:-
In this sense the rule of law is expressive of how the state ought to behave towards individuals in society. The rule of law is said to demand that governmental action conforms to precepts of good administration developed through the courts, this being an essential facet of accountable government in a democratic society. The constraints imposed on government through judicial review are in part procedural and in part substantive. The range of these principles varies, but normally includes ideas such as: legality, procedural propriety, participation, fundamental rights, openness, rationality, relevancy, propriety of purpose, reasonableness, equality, legitimate expectations, legal certainty and proportionality. There has been a vibrant academic debate as to whether such principles must be legitimated by reference to legislative intent. There is nonetheless general agreement that it is the courts that have developed the principles of judicial review over the past 350 years.

Of course it's great to see him leaping into action to deal with the most important things first such as collapsing courtrooms, the shortage of Judges and court sittings, the huge backlog in processing cases and the relative poverty of Criminal Barristers which means that defendants go unrepresented wasting Court time.

Go Dom!!

Asylum-seekers have now been told they have 20days to fill in 11 page questionnaires, to 'speed up' the assessment process. Here's an interesting technical thread from an expert on the subject (who's known to some of us).

I note that the Home Office refuses to provide the form in anything other than English but insist that any supporting documents from the applicant will not be accepted if they are in another language; the applicant is responsible for obtaining a translation. This is a specialist skill and not always cheap or easy to do within the stipulated 20 day time limit.

And suggesting (in English) to an applicant who doesn’t understand English that they can use a machine translator to read and fully comprehend the questionnaire is ridiculous. Also, machine translations are sloppy and should never be relied upon, especially in a crucial legal situation.
