To be fair, he seems lovely but I can't get past the Scientology thing. I mean Tom Cruise obviously, not Shep, though he could probably do some of the high altitude stunts. I'm not sure where he stands on 'going clear' and being a level 8 Thetan.

Yes, he does appear slightly nuts in that regard.
Yet he has managed to maintain an excellent reputation with the public which shows he is very smart when it comes to PR.

True, and the fans prefer to ignore that side of his character.
When he turned up at a cafe in Northumberland on a bike, those inside just wanted to go into full fan mode, which they did.

No, both him and John Travolta aren't much for proselytising it it seems, though Cruise is very much all-in apparently. The Going Clear documentary in Scientology is very good, as is the stuff actress Leah Remini has done too. Her perspective is interesting because she was brought up in it as opposed to being a convert. Basically, very explotative of its adherents in terms of taking your money and making you work for free, and don't take criticism by ex members very well at all, to put it mildly.
There are lots of Hollywood Scientologists - Elizabeth Moss, Nancy Cartwright, the 2 guys out of My Name is Earl, the musician Beck. Author Neil Gaiman grew up in it but left.
Hard to leave these things after a certain point when you are so emotionally and financially invested. I'm too tight with money to join that stuff.
Edit: Jason Lee has left it too and Beck is backtracking.

Well, I'm away from home again, but I hear that today they were both arrested and charged. Her charge more serious than his, but police cannot say what charges are. Car reg numbers have tied them to criminal activity.
Letters have been served and PCSOs now want everything logged from everybody. Still weeks or months away from a resolution, but it's in the post.
