Could be an ''away-blame-the Other'' vote versus a ''home'' vote issue. Probably astute domestically but bad for Europe.

If it were the UK, I'd be saying that EU elections were always an opportunity for protest votes (see UKIP, and Farage eho was repeatedly voted into the EU parliament but never the UK one).

Not so sure about the French. They've always seemed far more willing to vote for extremes in either direction.
