If it's so difficult to claim asylum, why is there such a backlog?

I don’t think I can make it any simpler for you than I already have, and it’s stated in the post you’ve just replied to.

You might be right in this instance, it is the government's fault, but only because it has made the UK more desirable for economic migrants than anywhere else.

Please explain what the government has done to make the UK the most desirable country in the world for asylum seekers. (This I’ve got to see!)

QED applies, thousands of people hack half way - or more - across Europe then jump into the English channel to get here.

Another view, with which I have some agreement, is it doesn't say a lot for all the countries they pass through.

You do nothing other than moan and whinge about every aspect of the UK and its governance.

I recognise the UK has an awful lot going for it.

Could be better, of course, but I'm in no desperate rush to swap this country for anywhere else.

Don't let facts* get in the way of a bigoted rant.

*the UK gets far fewer asylum seekers than neighbouring European countries.

But that what you get from a leftie government hating independence supporting Scottish zealot.

Could you brush up on your punctuation? That sentence is rather confusing, as I am not sure whether the subject is an indy supporter who hates leftie governments, or a fan of leftie governments who supports hating independence, or who knows what.

Clear communication is supposed to be a fundamental skill of a good journalist, right?

Yebbut that's because our beastly government makes it so hard to apply.

You can't have it all ways, but that won't stop you trying.

Bullshite.

You grasped the meaning well enough, so stop playing silly games.

He wasn't a good journalist, was he.

Minor hack on some irrelevant local rag.

Another topic of which you know nothing - me.

It must be tool shows how thick he is day today.

Wrong on all counts. Asylum seekers tend to choose the country nearest to them, which is why countries like Turkey have huge numbers.

The UK just makes it hard for asylum seekers by being so slow processing claims, and in so doing costing the taxpayer unnecessary huge sums of money.

Blimey, all that just to say you don’t know?

With all the waffle and the bad punctuation, your editor must have knocked back almost everything you wrote!

I doubt editorial standards were very high on the Hartlepool Advertiser

So, presumably, most asylum seeks arriving in UK are from France, Netherlands, Republic of Ireland, Belgium?

Would the distance of the UK from the origin country of many (possibly most) Asylum Seekers not have a bearing?

What do you mean by 'from'? As in have travelled via those countries? Then yes, with the caveat that I doubt many come via Ireland.

And bearing on what? The UK has an obligation to accept people seeking asylum. If the UK refuses then so could Turkey, Jordan, Germany, Italy, France and so on, and we would have no asylum system.
