The UK’s broken asylum system

Maybe they have no choice. Have you thought of that?

A sizeable chunk are very vulnerable Albanisns, often young, who are trafficked here then forced into some sort of slavery. Girls too.
What is a ''sizeable chunk''? And where do you get those numbers from? I was referring to those who go to dinghies without being forced because if they are being forced it's an crime on itself so it would be a bit cruel to then say ''why are you coming here?''
There is apparently an belief amongst some or a large part(i don't known the exact numbers) of the migrants already in the EU so safe in terms of having basic rights an protections etc. that the uk is the ''walhalla'' i just trying to find out what those reasons might be.

Love a good clamping.

Two reasons, I think, as to why they come to the UK rather than stay in the first safe country (which they don't need to because as long as that country is a signatory to the 1951 UN Refugee Convention, they can go to any one of those countries) are 1) The English language. One of the most widely spoken languages in the world and 2) No ID cards. They can just disappear into their respective communities if they so wish. I lived in Finland and currently here in Asia and you can't do a thing without an ID card, even going to a doctor requires an ID card.

The authorities believe they detect 100% of small boat crossings. 12% of Albanians are referred to UK's Modern Slavery system. This doesn't mean that they will be deemed victims, but it means there is reasonable evidence to suggest that they are. There are, typically, huge delays in processing these referrals.

Data from University of Oxford Migration Observatory.

He wasn't a good journalist, was he.

Minor hack on some irrelevant local rag.

I'm frankly astonished that he's managed to persuade so many people here that he was any kind of journalist at all. I suspect Fozy T had it nailed a way back.

Is that a “for” or “against” ID Cards?

But it’s not a phrase I’d ever heard before and still don’t know what it means.
I’m reluctant to google it because it sounds like it might return some dodgy results.

No need for dodgy googling. Clamped is a Scottish word equivalent to "sit down, shut up". May be an Edinburgh thing?

Be that as it may there is still an substancial amount of asylum seekers that travel trough Europe directly to the uk and are prepared to make dangerous crossings to get here. Something you don't need when you're already in Spain/Gemany/France etc.

It’s entirely the decision of the person seeking asylum.

As has been pointed out many times before, there is no obligation to request asylum in the first safe country and having a preference for the UK is likely because of the language, or presence of family members.

In the end it doesn’t matter, we are signatories to the convention and have a duty to process claims.

If someone wants to take the stance that all displaced people should stop in the first safe country then they are arguing for the collapse of the entire asylum system.
