…, faster processing and an abilty for them to work once they are awaiting status would be a start if you ask me, along with an quicker route into an permanent status if they find cetain jobs etc. Also i would work on recognizing international education, for example i remember a frustrated syrian doctor in an asylum center because he wanted to help people and/or learn update his medical papers so he could actually do something.

So there is enough that can be done but we seem to be stuck on either ''let them all in'' or ''we need to stop those boats'' while the solutions need to be found elsewhere.

it is stupid because they can make a deal to ship them off to Rwanda but they apparently can't make deals with countries they came from.(and no i'm not advocating we should make deals with regimes like Iran etc. )

I agree with what you say above.

I disagree with what you say about legal routes but I see @All uphill is already addressing that with you.

It doesn't take long on Google to find (a) a campaign against the RNLI rescuing migrants, seemingly organised by Britain First and (b) Nick Griffin of the BNP calling fo boats full refugees, or at least some of them, to be sunk.

I can’t find it right now, but just the other day I saw a tweet from LBC where a woman called in to say that she’d rather the boats were prevented from reaching our coastline. She understood this would result in many people dying but considered it acceptable.

In 2019 there was a guy who called in with the view that the army should be brought in and if the asylum seekers refuse to leave, they should be shot. That interview is still accessible on LBC’s site.

Bizarre. Perhaps, we could use the discarded rubber boats to "export' the "Anthonys" to France?, in a sort of swap. I think we would be coming out ahead ;)

The phrase used was 'a lot of the gammony types'.

Griffin and the BNP hardly fit.

What @the snail said was so ignorant and stupid it's not really worth discussing.

That a few posters believe it could be stood up is worrying.

And you accused me of being dogmatic.

What is the legal route for, say, an Iranian woman wanting asylum in the UK?

Current ‘safe and legal’ routes are extremely limited both in their eligibility criteria and the countries to which they apply. People coming to the UK for humanitarian reasons would need to be an immediate family member of a person already recognised as a refugee in the UK, recognised as a refugee in another country themselves or from Afghanistan, Hong Kong or Ukraine.

Essentially, your Iranian woman would either need to be already recognised as a refugee in another country, or have an immediate family member in the UK who is a recognised refugee, or she's fûcked.

As ever, the system is not what the gammon think it is.

I've read lots of comments online pretty much saying that though.

I'm sure you have, but I'm also sure you know about 99% of what's written online is garbage.

Your Venn diagram of Britain First/BNP and 'Gammons' is very different to mine...

Even as a pretence for forum purposes, you can't seriously believe there's much of an overlap between the two groups.

Why not just be honest?

One of my rules on these places is to post honestly and not to engage in 'pretence for forum purposes'. Sometimes the temptation to wind folks up is too much but not here and not on this subject.

While the amount by which 'Gammon' and extreme right politics overlap can vary according to where one starts from I don't think seeing significant commonality is absurd.

I known i think that is an discussion for an other day

That makes sense yes across europe it is needed for some little things but not for the doctor.
Why is it a discussion for another day? It's perfectly reasonable to mention it here as the subject is asylum, which this convention covers. And, yes, when I lived in Finland, you needed to show your ID card when you went to the doc. Same here in Asia. The first thing the receptionist asks, either in Finland or here, is to see my ID card.

So where are the ruddy faced 60+year olds in the classic BNP meeting pics?

They are all snarling young adults, are they not?

That 'virtually none' - quote from the Home Office dug up by @Bromptonaut - of the boat people have any identification really bugs me.

It's one thing to offer somewhere to live to people you can identify, but we don't know the first thing about any of the boat people, apart from what you can guess by looking at them.

I've always supported ID cards for UK citizens.
